TU Collection of Industrially Important Microorganisms

The collection of industrially important microorganisms at the Vienna University of Technology was founded by Univ. Prof. Dr. Christian P. Kubicek in the mid-90s’ after his pioneering work in the molecular diversity of Hypocrea and Trichoderma.

The main principle of archiving the strains of filamentous fungi is based on the simultaneous detection of the corresponding genetic and phenetic identity for every strain.

The collection currently consists of about 4,000 strains isolated world-wide, for which approximately 5,500 core nucleotide gene sequences are available.

The collection is operated through the interactive web-based database maintained by the group of Fungal Evolution and Biodiversity.

The majority of the strains deposited in the collection belong to Hypocrea and Trichoderma (~80%), whereas there also isolates of Gibberella, Fusarium, Aspergillus, Penicillium, Dendryphiella, Cordyceps and other fungi.
