Bio-ABC: development of a two-step biological CO2-fixing process for the production of fuel chemicals

Mechanistic methods that employ comprehensive first-principle relationships as well as kinetic- and metabolic models received attention for their ability to accelerate bioprocess development tasks and to solve manufacturing challenges [1]


Mechanistic methods were recently successfully used for real-time bioprocess design, bioprocess analysis and bioprocess control tasks. Furthermore, they can be used for the extraction of relevant information from big fermentation data sets as well as to increase information quality.


Within this project, we develop a novel highly modular toolbox combining existing and novel first principle bioprocess design, analysis and control algorithms. The object-oriented toolbox allows the fast development mechanistic algorithms as required in academia and industry and the fast implementation in existing process control software. Furthermore, it provides ready-made algorithms for typical process analysis and control tasks for recombinant microbial, mammalian and fungi processes. 


The algorithms can be applied for

i) acceleration of bioprocess development through more efficient experimental design,

ii) fast extraction of knowledge from big process data sets and

iii) closed-loop process control to achieve manufacturing excellence.


We anticipate that the toolbox will facilitate and accelerate the science-based development and continuous improvement of processes, both in industry and academia.
